- HELP: Abuse policy and complaints
On this page, we explain Freakshells abuse policy and how you should make a
proper abuse report.
Our abuse policy always conforms to general IRCnet rules. Should the IRC
network in question enforce explicit abuse rules which differ from
Freakshells rules, the IRC network's rules win.
Parts:
What is abuse, and what is not?
How to send an abuse report
What you can do against annoying users
Abuse Policy
So, what is abuse and what is not abuse? And what can/will we do?
Please note that there are several things which you can do yourself if you are
annoyed by one of our users.
We have a separate page for a more detailed
discussion on IRCnet rules.
There are several different kinds of possible abuse.
Cloning
Loading clones is forbidden. It's against Freakshells and against IRC rules.
Any process which exceeds the shell's limit will be killed.
If a user loads a significant amount of clones, we will deactivate his shell.
He might get a k-line also.
Note: this only applies to clones which are loaded from Freakshells
servers. It does not apply to clones which are loaded from other
servers!
Flooding
Flooding can be on IRC with msg, ping, ... or a ddos. It's against the rules,
so if we have proof of a flood, we will take appropriate actions.
Note: the hard thing is to actually prove it. We won't accept a simple
statment like "he ddosed me, kill him." - that's not enough. In fact, it's
unfortunately almost impossible to prove this.
Hacking
Hacking has nothing to do with ircnet; it's illegal anyway. If we have good
proof of hacking, we will take actions against the hackers.
Note: again, it's almost impossible to prove it. You are probably
better off if you report the incident to the police.
Spam
Spam is not really forbidden, it's not illegal. But noone likes to see it. If
we have proof of spamming, we will ask the user to stop it.
Please help yourself also and just ban the spammer - or ignore him.
Takeover with serverop, flood, hack
If the takers got op illegally, it's against the rules. We will take measures.
Takeover with legal op
If the taker were legal ops in your chan, and then deopped everyone else, it's
*not* against ircnet rules. On ircnet, channels are *not* owned. If you op someone,
you have to trust him. If he abuses your trust, it's your problem. We cannot
kill the user.
We will, however, talk to the user and try to find a peaceful solution.
You can also mail the ircops, but I can assure you, they won't k-line for this.
How to send an abuse report
Please send all abuse reports to support@freakshells.com.
Don't use other email addresses, don't flood us with logs on irc :-)
Always include logs (or other proof)! A report without a log will be
discarded.
Please send the log in plain text (.txt). We don't accept other formats
like .doc, .rtf, ...
Send an abuse report only *once*. We don't need 10 times the same report
from 10 different people.
Give us some time to respond. Don't query us on irc every 5 minutes.
If we think you are right, and it's really abuse, we will deactivate the
user's shell for 1 - 3 weeks, approximately. Depends on the case. We will not
delete the shell forever, if it's the user's first abuse.
What can I do myself against annoying users?
There are several measures which you can do yourself against annoying IRC users.
Before you complain, please skip through this list.
Ban / Ignore a user based on his/her ident
Freakshells uses a fixed ident configuration, which means the user's ident will
ALWAYS remain the same. For example, if the user testuser spams in your
channel, just ban his ident like this:
/mode #yourchannel +b *!testuser@195.149.115.0/24
/mode #yourchannel +b *!testuser@2001:1408:1337::/48
This will ban this user forever, regardless of which vhost he actually uses.
Use IRCnet's +R mode
On IRCnet, the +R mode can help against takeovers. You are strongly advised to
use it! For further information, please read our tutorial.
Be careful who you trust.
Almost all takeovers happen because a channel operator uses his powers to take
the channel. So be careful who you trust! Not everyone needs operator privileges.
